EQUAL STATUS AND HUMAN RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN EAST AFRICA

The Equal Status and Human Rights of Women in East Africa (EAHUWO) is an East African based program that seeks to improve knowledge of international human rights standards among professionals working on the human rights of women - with focus on equality and non-discrimination. This program will contribute to the enhancement of gender equality throughout the East African Region.

The program is run by the Africa Youth Trust (AYT) in partnership with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI), with sponsorship from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM

The program aims at improving the promotion, protection and practical application of gender equality and the human rights of women in East Africa. This program offers participants an opportunity to develop and strengthen their skills in the areas of gender mainstreaming, women’s empowerment, human rights, good governance and democracy.

It is primarily designed to target representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), government agencies and academics working on gender and equality issues.

The program is also designed as a forum for organizations from across East Africa to share best practices, and build upon human rights advocacy skills. This will strengthen the ability of the participating organizations to undertake the challenge of engaging in the legislative and policy reform processes in their respective countries.

Eligible participants will be drawn from Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
